Gondar sits high in Ethiopia's northern highlands and once served as the imperial capital from the 17th to the 19th centuries. Travelers often call it the Camelot of Africa because of its concentration of stone castles, palaces, and fortifications that still define the city's skyline and spirit.
A stay here is as much about atmosphere as architecture. Chanting from nearby churches, highland light on stone walls, and a working university city give Gondar a living character beyond the heritage sites. Many visitors combine the historic core with a journey into the Simien Mountains, pairing empire history with dramatic highland landscapes.
Florida International Hotel, near University of Gondar Maraki campus, offers a practical base about a 10-minute drive from Ras Gimb and Fasil Ghebbi. After a day among castles and churches, return to spacious guest rooms, complimentary Wi-Fi, and a buffet breakfast served daily from 6:00 AM to 10:00 AM.
Plan at least two nights in Gondar if you can. That rhythm leaves room for the Royal Enclosure, Fasilidas' Bath, Debre Birhan Selassie, and an evening to rest before a Simien day trip.
